How to make a Little Lace Ghost Garland for Halloween
If you're looking to add a vintage, feminine touch to your Halloween decor, try this simple lace ghost garland. All of the steps are written below, and project time is about an hour. I know, I know, ghosts are typically white, but I went with black for this one in order to add a gothic, eerie feel. What do you think? I think these little ghosts would be adorable in some unexpected pastels, too.
Supplies List
- Scissors
- Lace fabric (you will need (2) 8" squares of material per ghost).
- Small balls for the ghost heads. Wool felt balls like these work well.
- Cotton cord like this one (don't use a slick material for the cord, as the ghosts will not stay in place once your garland is hanging).
- Accent ribbon (I used a 2-yard roll of 1/4" width velvet ribbon)
- Sashiko or Darning Needle (a needle with an eye large enough to thread the black cording through).
Instructions
- Decide how long you want your garland to be, then cut that length of black cord. (I planned to use my garland in a small space, so I made this one from a 5-foot length of cord.) Set aside.
- Decide how many ghosts you'd like to make and cut one 4-inch length of cord for each ghost that you plan to make. (I made 7, but you'll likely want to make more if you make a longer garland.)
- Cut (2) 8-inch squares of lace material for each ghost that you plan to make.
- Place two lace squares down and offset the orientation of the top lace square from the bottom lace square.
- Place a wool/felt ball in the middle of the top lace square.
- Pull up the sides of the lace squares and gather them around the foam ball. Give the material a slight twist in order to stabilize it, then tie around the gather with a 4-inch section of cord.
- Repeat to make as many ghosts as you'd like.
- Thread the long cord through your needle. I used a darning needle with an eye large enough to fit the cord through.
- Thread each ghost onto the garland cord by pulling the needle through just the top layer of lace at the top of the ghost head. Catch enough material that the lace won't have too much tension and become weakened from the ghost hanging.
- Tie a simple loop at each end of the garland cord to be used for hanging later.
- Distribute the ghosts along the garland cord. They should move easily.
- Cut a section of accent ribbon to be placed between each ghost. Tie into a simple bow between each ghost. You can make these as long as you'd like. I used a 12-inch length for each bow.
- Distribute the ghosts and bows as you would like.
There you have it - a simple lace ghost garland that is perfect for adding a touch of vintage charm to your Halloween decorations. Get creative with different lace patterns and colors to customize your garland to suit your style. Happy Halloween season!
