Salem Witch Hat Pillow Tutorial

This time of year always has me reminiscing on a trip to Salem, Massachusetts that I went on as a child. What a beautiful and charming town, so rich with history! There's nothing quite like the magic of New England fall.

This free tutorial will guide you through the steps to create a charming pillow that can be customized to suit your style. Make it as a gift or display it in your home during the Halloween season. Project time is about an hour. The PDF tutorial includes sewing templates. Click the photo below to have the tutorial sent to your inbox!

Supplies List

  • Printer, tape, fabric marking tool, iron, rotary cutter or scissors, sewing machine, walking foot (optional), pins or binding clips, needle, and thread.
  • Stuffing for the pillow, such as Silky Poly-Fil Fiber Filling.
  • Main fabric: 2/3 yard fabric for the hat.
  • Accent fabric: 6" x WOF for the tie detail. (You can substitute ribbon for the tie detail.)

Have fun with this pillow by choosing from a variety of fabrics; you're definitely not limited to using quilting cotton. The black pillow shown here is made from stretchy plush minky fabric, and the gray pillow is made from linen blend fabric. I found both of these in the remnant bin at my local Joann's store. This hat would be really cute made out of patchwork, too! Maybe you have a forgotten quilt top or large orphan block that needs new life?

Feel free to add embellishments like hand embroidery, a decorative buckle, or ribbon to personalize your witch hat pillow. I'm thinking of adding some hand embroidered stars to my next witch hat pillow. Get creative and make it your own!
